Privacy policy
The short version
- Your information is yours. Delete your account and it's gone.
- We never sell or share your information, not even in anonymous or combined form.
- It's stored in Canada.
- No ads, no trackers, no analytics. Clarisa doesn't follow you around the internet.
- An AI service is only used when you ask, and your name and contact details are never sent to it.
Who we are
Clarisa is run by Javan Goddard, a sole proprietor in Chase, British Columbia. Javan is responsible for how Clarisa handles your personal information. You can reach him at privacy@clarisa.ca.
We follow British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
What we collect
Your account
- Your email address, which is how you log in.
- Your password, stored only as a scrambled one-way code (a "hash"). Nobody can read your password, including us.
- When you confirmed your email and agreed to the beta terms.
Your profile
What you give us, from your resume or the short form, and anything you add or change later:
- Your name, email, phone number, town and any links you include (like a LinkedIn page).
- Your work history, education, skills, certifications, licences, projects and summary.
- Your job search settings: how far you'll travel, your lowest pay and the kinds of work you want.
- The choices you make on your profile, such as confirming an occupation or turning down a suggestion, so we don't ask again.
Your resume
When you upload a resume, we read it and keep its text, so your profile can be checked against it and improved later. The file itself is deleted as soon as it's been read.
Technical information
- Cookies: one cookie keeps you logged in (for up to 30 days, or until you log out). While you're signing up, a second cookie holds your upload for up to 24 hours. That's all. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.
- Server logs: like most websites, our server records visits (the internet address they came from, the page and the time) to keep Clarisa secure and fix problems. These logs are kept for a limited time and deleted automatically.
- Protection against abuse: to stop things like password guessing, we count recent attempts by internet address. These counts are kept only in the server's memory.
How we use it
- To build your profile and show it back to you.
- To match you with jobs and explain why each one fits.
- To make resumes from your profile, when you ask.
- To send you account emails: confirming your email, resetting your password, and confirming a new login email. We don't send newsletters or marketing.
- To keep Clarisa secure and working.
We never sell your information, share it with advertisers, use it to target ads, or give it to anyone else, in any form, at any price. That includes anonymous or combined statistics made from your information.
When an AI service is used
Some features use an AI service to suggest wording: Polish the wording on a job, and Write my headline and summary for a resume aimed at a job. These only run when you press the button, and the page tells you what will be sent before you do.
- For a job's wording: that job's title, employer, dates and the lines you wrote about it.
- For a headline and summary: your jobs, dates, what you did, your skills, credentials and education, and the title of the job you're aiming for.
Your name, contact details and other identifying information are never sent. The AI service provider is in the United States, so this information is processed there. Under its terms for business customers, it doesn't use what we send to train its AI models. Nothing it suggests goes on your profile or resume unless you accept it.
Who else handles your information
Only the companies we need to run Clarisa, and only to provide it to you:
- Amazon Web Services: our server, database and backups, and the account emails, all in AWS's Canada (Central) region.
- The AI service provider described above, only for the features you choose to use.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, such as a valid court order.
Employers
Clarisa doesn't share your profile with employers today. When employer features arrive, you'll be asked first, and employers will see your town, never your name or contact details, unless you choose to apply to them.
How long we keep it
- Your account and profile: until you delete them.
- An unfinished signup (a resume uploaded, but no password chosen): deleted after 24 hours.
- Links in our emails stop working after a set time: 7 days to confirm your email, 1 hour for a password reset, 24 hours to confirm a new login email.
- Backups: a copy is made each night and kept for 14 days. When you delete your account, it disappears from Clarisa right away and from the backups within 14 days.
Your choices and rights
- See and correct everything on your profile, at any time. Every part of it can be edited or removed.
- Delete your account and everything in it from Your account. The database overwrites what's deleted, so it can't be recovered.
- Ask what information we hold about you, or ask a question about it, by emailing privacy@clarisa.ca. We'll answer within 30 days.
- Withdraw your consent at any time by deleting your account. Some features can't work without your information.
If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.
How we protect it
Clarisa is only reachable through a secure, encrypted connection (HTTPS). Passwords are stored as hashes, login attempts are limited, every page checks that it's yours before showing it, and deleted information is overwritten. No system is perfect, and if we ever learn that your information was exposed, we'll tell you, and the privacy commissioner as the law requires.
Young people
You must be at least 16 to use Clarisa. If you're under 19, please use it with a parent or guardian's permission.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. For a change that affects how your information is used, we'll tell you by email or on Clarisa before it takes effect.
